Specialist Notes

A little-known edition of this important work on Florentine history by Benedetto Varchi (1503-1565), a Florentine historian and humanist, a man of letters, and an erudite scholar, member of the Florentine Academy, and a priest. The volume contains two works: the History of the Wars of the Republic and the Life of Filippo Strozzi, son of Filippo, written by his brother Lorenzo. The first work includes the "notice to the reader", the "Life of Benedetto Varchi, written by Abbot D. Girolamo (otherwise known as Silvano) Razzi: to the Most Illustrious and Most Reverend Lord Bernardo de' Medici"; then Volume One begins with a full-page title ("Of the Florentine History of Benedetto Varchi"), preceded by the "Dedication to the Most Illustrious and Most Excellent Lord, and Most Observant Master, Cosimo Medici, Second Duke of Florence and Siena. Benedetto Varchi"; then the "Preface" and then the History divided into fifteen books (at the end of book X the second volume begins with a full-page title); at the end is the "Discourse, or Apology of Lorenzo de' Medici on the birth and death of Alessandro de' Medici, first Duke of Florence" and then the "Table of the most notable things". The second work includes the "Life of Filippo Strozzi, son of Filippo, written by his brother Lorenzo, which sheds much light on the previous History", as well as the "Table of the most notable things". Ref.: IT\ICCU\RMLE\013024. OCLC, 46246036. Condition: The hinges and plates are worn, the lower capital is damaged, the example is very browned, with widespread foxing. The work as a whole is in very good general condition.
