Information

[Paris, Coustelier], 1745. In 12°, 159 x 100 mm. Edition illustrated in copperplate engraving, including a frontispiece by Antoine Coypel, 4 head vignettes and 28 compositions by Philippe d'Orléans engraved by Benoît Audran , the final plate known as the “des petits pieds”, and finally 4 elegant culs-de-lampe depicting pastorals, drawn by Cochin fils and engraved by Chedel, added especially for this 1745 edition, which close each of the 4 books of the work. Apart from these four new vignettes, they are the same figures as the so-called “du Régent” edition of 1718, so much so that this date has remained on the frontispiece. The last figure, the “des petits pieds”, whose design has been attributed to the Count de Caylus, was not included in this first edition; Engraved in 1729, it was generally added later. BEAUTIFUL CONTEMPORARY SPONGED CALFSKIN BINDING , with spine finely decorated with small gilded irons, title block, gilded edges. Noble bookplate on the inside cover.

Specialist Notes

Longus's graceful romance, translated by Amyot, inspired 28 compositions, retouched and engraved by Benoît Audran. Grandson of Louis XIV, Philippe d'Orléans had been kept away from the battlefields, where he was just beginning to gain glory, by his uncle's jealousy. The young duke consoled himself for his inactivity by devoting himself to painting and music. Longus's graceful romance, translated by Amyot, inspired 29 compositions, retouched and engraved by Benoît Audran. His painting teacher was Antoine Coypel. Four beautiful culs-de-lampe by Cochin, engraved especially for this 1745 edition, are included.
