Specialist Notes

A splendid example of the most important and refined early edition of Machiavelli's works. After over two centuries of censorship, during which his works circulated only in clandestine editions, the new cultural climate of the Enlightenment enabled the author's full rehabilitation. Thus, symbolically, this edition was born in Florence and with the support of the Grand Duke of Tuscany, based on in-depth research in city libraries and archives, considered "an authentic literary monument" (Procacci, Studi sulla fortune di Machiavelli, Rome, 1965, p. 375).
