Leipzig, apud Petrum Conradum Monath, 1728. In-4°; contemporary brown leather binding, five-ribbed spine with gilt decorations, gilt title on a red leather cover, marbled paper endpapers, red spray-painted edges, ribbon page marker (light signs of use on the hinges); intaglio illustration at the dedication headpiece, with a portrait of the dedicatee, Frederick Augustus I (engraved by Georg Daniel Heumann), intaglio frontals, initials, endpapers and woodcut decorations, intaglio engravings in the text and one on a full page; text preceded by a dedication, preface and chronological table of the history of medicine. Ownership label with intaglio engraving, glued to the front pastedown ("ex libris D. Morand Acad. Paris. Londin. Bonon."). Light reddening and foxing; work in very good overall condition.

Specialist Notes

Rare first edition of this interesting and important work on the history of medicine, edited by Dr. Schulze, published by Peter Conrad Monath (1713-1747). Johann Heinrich Schulze (1687-1744), physician and professor in Halle, also an expert in Greek and Arabic literature.
