Specialist Notes
Second edition (the first was in 1755), a rare monograph on flatulence, a subject that curiously lends itself to investigations that stray into philosophy and, above all, ethics. Alongside purely scientific research, the origin of flatulence is also attributed to unexpected causes such as poverty of spirit. The author discusses the connection between flatulence, hypochondria, and melancholy, belching, phenomena related to indigestion or the abnormal presence of gas in the gastrointestinal tract, the treatment of these phenomena and the appropriate diet, the passions of the soul, purgatives, and so on. Zeviani (San Michele di Verona, 1725-Verona, 1808), a distinguished physician and scientist, was among the first in Italy to systematically address infant mortality.
