Specialist Notes
Eugene of Savoy was one of the most illustrious military men of his time. Having fallen out of favor with Louis XIV, inherited from his mother, he enlisted in the Imperial army after the king refused. At the age of 22, after the war of the Holy League (Empire, Poland, Venice) against the Turks, he was promoted to general of division. His various campaigns, particularly against France during the Spanish Succession, against Italy, and against the Turks, earned him the rank of generalissimo and, at the end of his life, that of governor of the Netherlands. Napoleon I considered him one of the seven great generals of history. Beyond his military biography, the work constitutes a highly significant political history of modern Europe.
