Specialist Notes

Diana Scultori (circa 1547–1612) was the first female artist to sell her work under her own name and one of the most important engravers. From a young age, she translated the graphic inventions of masters such as Giulio Romano and Parmigianino into engravings, revealing great technical skill and stylistic sensitivity. In 1566, Giorgio Vasari praised her talent, calling her works "marvellous." Around 1575, she moved to Rome, where she married the architect Francesco Capriani and collaborated with various artists, translating their compositions into print. She was the first woman to obtain a papal privilege for the distribution of her engravings and to be admitted among the Virtuosi al Pantheon, leaving an important mark on the history of engraving and female art.
