Specialist Notes
"a discouraged clarity, a tinkling of bells in the void": Vitaliano Brancati defines the painter Lazarus
"For a layman, the prominent feature in the early paintings of the painter Lazzaro is the diffusion of strong colors, in which a mysterious lucidity acts as both solitude and innocence. It is that innocence, a little lonely, of primitive man who sees the world still deserted. Naturally, not deserted of objects or figures, but deserted of that clear and vaguely populated possession that he, as a philosophical man and as a conscious artist, will have in later eras. It is, therefore, a discouraged clarity, a tinkling of bells in the void (...)."
