Specialist Notes

Luigi Capuana's "The Virgin King" is a fairy tale about a king determined not to marry and remain a "virgin," meaning without a wife or heirs. This decision causes concern in the kingdom, as it jeopardizes the succession to the throne. Through a series of adventures, encounters, and trials typical of folk tales, the king gradually understands the value of love, family, and responsibility to his people. He eventually abandons his initial plan, finding the right woman and ensuring the continuity of his kingdom. The story combines fantastical and moral elements, characteristic of Luigi Capuana's fairy tale collections.
