Specialist Notes
Very rare first Italian translation of the amusing book published in the same year in Paris under a pseudonym (Baron de l'Empesé).
«Since the variety of characters and minds is infinite, ties must be equally varied. In this little work, thirty-two different ways of wearing one's tie are represented. There is one for every person, whatever their fortune, whatever their temperament, and ultimately for all the conditions and circumstances of human life.» (p.6). «A charming little work, well known to bibliophiles» [Mario Praz, Cronache letterarie anglosassoni III, 349]. After the story of its origins, the use of silk collars and handkerchiefs, there are dozens of pleasant descriptions of knots according to character, talent, profession, and status. A book «which does not require just a day's study, but rather the daily work of several hours. From what crowd of obscure competitors and unworthy rivals will people of grace, the gallant, the elegant, and the truly fashionable not find themselves freed from this alone?» [p. 10].
