Information
82 x 115 cm
The painting is accompanied by a letter by Professor Eduard A. Safarik dated January 19 2008 (a copy is available). The scholar mentions another version of the composition which is of the same height but is cut off at the sides (the fragmentary painting, judged by the scholar to be an "autograph replica," is published in G. and U. Bocchi, Naturalia , Torino 1992, pp. 288-289, plate 101, and sold at Christie's Rome, June 16 2004, lot 123). As proof of the popularity of the cucina genre of which Giovanni Battista Recco was an eminent master, another of his inventions is worth mentioning, in which there are the same copper utensils featured in this canvas, but with different animals: the work is present in the Zeri Photo Archive with an attribution to Giovanni Domenico Valentino (n. 89546) and it was passed on the antiques market with an attribution to Giovan Battista Recco (Wannenes, Genoa, 6 March 2013, lot 409).
