Information

A hard copy of an encyclopedic entry on Allen Ginsberg, with corrections made by the writer himself and signed by him. The document was sent to Allen Ginsberg in 1991 to check his biography in the Grolier Encyclopedia. Ginsberg adjusted a few sentences, signed it, and returned it to the publisher. Allen Ginsberg (1926–1997) was one of the most influential American poets of the 20th century and a central figure of the Beat Generation, the literary and cultural movement that emerged in the 1950s. Ginsberg is universally known for his most famous work, the poem "Howl" (published in 1956). The poem is a violent, extended, and visionary denunciation of the destructiveness of capitalism, social conformity, and sexual repression in postwar America. Along with his friends and colleagues Jack Kerouac and William S. Burroughs, Ginsberg not only defined the Beat Generation but also laid the foundation for the counterculture and youth movements of the 1960s. The document was part of the collection of American authenticator and art expert Steve Juscik, one of the world's leading collectors of autographs and manuscripts, whose memorabilia is now held in various archives such as the National Library of New Zealand and Washington University.
