Specialist Notes
The "Landscape Conference," July 9-10, 1922, marked the culmination of Capri's intense early twentieth-century season and the pinnacle of Edwin Cerio's three-year mayoralty. In June, after a process lasting nearly two years, the so-called Croce law for landscape protection, the first in Italy, had finally been approved. Among the main promoters were two of the conference's participants, the Honorable Giovanni Rosadi (already a supporter of the first law on the protection of historical and artistic heritage, in 1909, known as the Rava-Rosadi law) and Luigi Parpagliolo, a lifelong director of the Directorate of Antiquities and Fine Arts. Alongside the politicians, Cerio, who was a "brilliant and versatile man of talent" (Piscopo, p. 14), invited the Futurists to the conference: Italo Tavolato, who launched, in Futurist style, a veritable "Manifesto of the Beauty of Capri"; Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, who not only gave a presentation (The Practical Style) but was also charged with literally providing the opening line: "After so many speakers, I will seem a little down to earth to you"; the leading exponent of Futurist architecture during the 1920s, Virgilio Marchi (Futurist Architecture); and, finally, the eccentric Swiss intellectual Gilbert Clavel. The conference proceedings were published under the banner of "Pagine dell'Isola," first a magazine and then a series directed by Edwin Cerio. The resulting book is of rare simplicity and typographic beauty, printed on unbleached Amalfi paper and adorned with select illustrations. The texts included here are all original and unique editions. Cammarota, Futurismo, VI.28; Sandomenico, Leggere Capri, p. 111 (with inaccuracies); Piscopo, Capri futurista (Naples 2001).
