Specialist Notes

A very rare edition by Sant'Omero (the first editions from Lyon, apud Horatium Cardon, and from Rome, apud Iacobum Mascardum, both from 1617, are more common) of the Latin schoolbook edited by the famous Jesuit historian Famiano Strada (1572–1679), best known for De Bello Belgico, though this work made him equally popular. It is a collection of lectures, given at the Collegium Romanum, on rhetorical and poetic style and other literary topics. The book is now remembered for two different Neo-Latin poems in an imaginary competition, supposedly under the patronage of Leo X, in which famous Renaissance figures appear as Roman poets. Pietro Bembo appears as Lucretius, and the poem given to him by Strada has a minor place in the prehistory of telecommunications as a precursor to the electric telegraph. Baldassare Castiglione appears as Claudian, and his poem, the contest between the musician and the nightingale, has become more famous than any of Claudian's works. There are two fine but very different contemporary English imitations of this work, the first by John Ford, The Lover's Melancholy (1629), the other by Richard Crashaw, Music's Duel. § Third edition of this mock-heroic-mythological work, edited by Ferrante Pallavicino (previously published in Venice in 1640 and 1650). Ferrante Pallavicino or Pallavicini (1615–1644), writer, pamphleteer, beheaded in Avignon. Prov.: Handwritten inscription at the top of the first free front flyleaf ("Domenico Batacchi also wrote a book with the title La rete di Vulcano…"). § A rare collection of two works , the first on the moral aspects of Noah and the creation of the ark, the second on the victory of Nicetas, or The Triumph of Chastity. The author of both works is Jeremias Drexel (Jeremias Dressellio, 1581-1638, was a German Jesuit, preacher, and writer). The first work was published posthumously.
