Specialist Notes

Interesting document of papal history relating to some functions carried out within the Apostolic Palace by specific categories of employees, "Mace Bearers, Iron Gate Bearers and Custodians".

The first part establishes "the manner, form, and place of carrying the Mace and Staffs with their Ornaments, both in public functions and outside them." This is followed by various Bulls regulating the distribution of emoluments according to different functions and circumstances, the confirmation of the Statutes of the Mace Bearers (chapters 11-17), the reduction of their number to twenty, the sentences promulgated against the Masters of the Gates, the constitutions and statutes of the "Genti della Camera Apostolica," etc.
