Specialist Notes

Collection of writings on various subjects by Erasmus of Rotterdam (1466?-1536, humanist, man of letters, philosopher, and theologian, born in Rotterdam and died in Basel), arranged in the form of family conversations, edited by Cornelius Schrevelius (1608-1661, Dutch philologist). The work is preceded by the author's dedication, made to Johannes Frobenius (1460-1527, Swiss publisher and printer) in Basel in 1524, on the occasion of the first edition of this work, and by the "Vita Erasmi, Erasmo auctore". § Pistola di Fra Giocondo dell'ordine de' roverscianti: Fra Giocondo is the pseudonym of Giovanni Jacopo Dionisi (1724-1808), marquis, priest, curator of the Capitular Library of Verona, author of publications on Veronese history and antiquarianism, and a respected Dante scholar. The only work published in Gardone di Val Trompia before 1900. A rare and interesting text written ironically in response to the critical review it received in 1786 by the Giornale Enciclopedico di Bologna; in particular, the author includes replies to the comments on literary news and anecdotes relating to Dante and the Divine Comedy.
L. Ceccotti was a man of letters and literary critic from Viterbo, who lived in the first half of the 19th century. Slight traces of use on the binding (abrasions on the spine).
§ First edition, translated by the Greek scholar Francesco Vincenzo Negri (1769-1827) of the "Periegesi della Terra" by the late Hellenistic poet Dionysius, edited by Antonio Papadopoli (editor's name at the bottom of the dedication). This is the only surviving text by the Greek poet Dionysius (Periegetes) that contains a description of the known world in the first century AD. The Italian translation is accompanied by the original Greek text and followed by extensive explanatory notes. It is preceded by a long historical preface on the work and the author. Dionysius Periegetes (c. 55 AD – after 115 AD) was an ancient Greek didactic poet.
