§ First edition, translated by the Greek scholar Francesco Vincenzo Negri (1769-1827) of the "Periegesi della Terra" by the late Hellenistic poet Dionysius, edited by Antonio Papadopoli (editor's name at the bottom of the dedication). This is the only surviving text by the Greek poet Dionysius (Periegetes) that contains a description of the known world in the first century AD. The Italian translation is accompanied by the original Greek text and followed by extensive explanatory notes. It is preceded by a long historical preface on the work and the author. Dionysius Periegetes (c. 55 AD – after 115 AD) was an ancient Greek didactic poet.
