Information

Milan, Francesco Pagnoni, 1865. In 2°. 3 vols. With 55 finely engraved copperplates, light foxing, a few leaves slightly browned, contemporary blue morocco binding, elegant covers with blind and gilt embossing, with author and title in the center, gilt titles and decorations on the four-ribbed spine, minor defects.

Specialist Notes

A beautiful illustrated edition. The copperplate engravings are by Giuseppe Gandini based on sketches by Federigo Faruffini and Carlo Barbieri. The edition contains important annotations by Tommaseo, who prefaces each canticle with a discourse and adds his remarkable Discourses on the symbolic and literary meanings of the poem to each volume. Mambelli, 394.
