Specialist Notes
The most beautiful and famous of the ancient illustrated editions of Rabelais, known as "Le Duchat's Rabelais." Cohen, 839-842. Le Duchat published the first critical and annotated edition of Rabelais, with the collaboration of La Monnoye, in Amsterdam, in 1711. The splendid illustration includes a magnificent frontispiece drawn and engraved by Folkema, 2 titles engraved by B. Picart, 1 monogram on the title of the three volumes, 3 topographical engravings, the figure for the Bottle, 1 portrait of Rabelais engraved by Tanjé, 12 vignettes and 12 culs-de-lampe by Picart and 12 figures drawn by Du Bourg, engraved by Bernaerts, Folkema and Tanjé.
