Specialist Notes
Very rare original edition. Giovanni Bartolomeo Marliani (Robbio (Vercelli) 1488 - Rome, 1566) was a historian, topographer and antiquarian. In May 1534 he published his most famous work, the Antiquae Romae topographia, libri septem (Romae, A. Blado «in aedibus d. Ioan. Bap. De Maximis»), a guide to the antiquities of Rome equipped with illustrations and based above all on classical literary and epigraphic sources (but also on the results of archaeological finds). The work is dedicated to Cardinal Gian Domenico De Cupis, who had probably supported him in his studies in the years 1533-37 (Jacks, 1993, pp. 207, 344). M. had made use of the collaboration of various scholars, among which Annibale Caro stands out, but in the Errata he complains of the typos, due to the too much haste of the typography workers and his absence during the printing phases. The many errors contained in this edition did not escape the attention of Roman scholars, including Pietro Corsi, who corrected a copy of the work with his own hand (now at Yale University, Beinecke Library.
