Specialist Notes
Original edition. See Furcheim, p. 61. Valuable collection of essays on volcanoes, in particular on Vesuvius, edited by the Florentine scientist Giovanni Targioni Tozzetti (Florence 1712 - 1783) . The first volume is entirely dedicated to an unpublished work by Ferdinando Galiani "Observations on Vesuvius and on the materials belonging to this volcano and to others contained in the Museum"; the work is preceded by an essay, which also serves as a preface, by Targioni Torzetti entitled "On the fire-loving mountains of Tuscany and Vesuvius". The second volume contains 13 essays by various authors, mostly dedicated to Vesuvius, including the "Letter of Pliny the Younger to Tacitus"; the "History of the fire of Vesuvius which occurred in the year 1737" by Francesco Serao then still attributed to an unknown Mr. Francesco Darbie (the large view of Vesuvius attached to the volume refers to this work and is the view of Vesuvius during the eruption of 1737) and two letters, by Antonio di Gennaro and Ciro Saverio Minervino on the eruption of Vesuvius in 1779.
