Five title pages with vignette, with 174 portraits and tables, 2 by Blake, numerous illustrations in the text, all finely engraved in copper, browning, some small tears, binding in the middle Moroccan, on the spine with 5 author's nerves , title and tomation in gold, gilded cuts, slight defects. To the counterplates the ex libris "Curt Lilli Sobernheim".

English reprint of volumes I and II and first English edition of the third volume. Sumptuous and famous work by Lavater who collects his psychological-physiognomic research based on introspective study and above all with the observation of somatic characters, to grasp the intimate characteristics of the soul and its experience of the divine. Originally published in German (Physiognomische Fragmente, 1775-78), it was translated into English by Henry Hunter, from the subsequent French edition and published in 41 parts under the direction of Royal Academy artists Henry Fuseli (and Thomas Holloway, who both contributed with illustrations. & nbsp;
