The painting is accompanied by an expertise by Filippo Todini, dated 2 May 1986 (a copy is available), which confirms the present attribution.
The scholar dates the work to around 1490, underlining its high quality, in which the echoes of Mantegna's tradition, such as the way of outlining the contours and of giving the figures an almost geometric regularity, are softened by the reflections of the Venetian painting, from Giovanni Bellini to Bartolomeo Vivarini.
The panel finds comparison with the Madonna by Jacopo da Montagnana preserved in the Santuario del Tresto in Ospedaletto Euganeo and with the Annunciation at the centre of the triptych in the chapel of the Palazzo Vescovile in Padua.
