Son of the sculptor Paolo da Montereale, Francesco was active in Abruzzo between the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Trained by Perugino, Pinturicchio, and Antoniazzo Romano, he apprenticed with Saturnino Gatti, the most important Abruzzese painter of the time. Around the 1520s and 1530s, he approached the style of Cola dell'Amatrice and produced his most important works, including the Sant'Eusanio Altarpiece and the Nativity of the Virgin for the Church of Santa Maria della Misericordia (now preserved in the Museo Nazionale d'Abruzzo).
