Specialist Notes

Work I: Nicola Fergola (1753–1824) was the main promoter in Naples of a rigorously synthetic geometry, inspired by classical Euclidean models. His scientific activity focused primarily on conic sections and geometric loci, approached deductively and as a conscious alternative to the then dominant algebraic analysis.
II work: A very rare Italian translation from the German edited by Dr. M. Pieri of the most famous work by Karl Georg Christian von Staudt (1798–1867). A German mathematician, trained in Göttingen under the influence of Gauss and a professor at the University of Erlangen from 1835, Staudt was a central figure in the nineteenth-century development of projective geometry.
