Specialist Notes

This is the first, rare edition of Franz Woepcke's (1826–1864) pioneering study on the spread of Hindu-Arabic numerals and their origins. This work is one of the first modern analyses of the transmission of the decimal positional system using the digits 0 to 9 to the medieval world, illustrating how these developed from India and entered the European mathematical landscape via the Arab world. This contribution is considered a fundamental testimony for understanding the historical path of one of the most widely used numeral systems globally today.
