The Goonies is a 1985 adventure film by Richard Donner. The screenplay by Chris Columbus was based on the story by Steven Spielberg, who was also the producer of the film. The name of the film comes from a group of four boys, who grew up in a neighborhood of Astoria, Oregon, called "Goon Docks"; right from the name of their neighborhood, the boys call themselves the 'Goonies': Michael "Mikey" Walsh, the leader of the Goonies; Lawrence "Chunk" Cohen, chubby and overweight, is a chronic liar and has a weakness for food; Clark "Mouth" Deveraux, talkative and sarcastic, behaves like a braggart and is prone to vulgar jokes; Richard "Data" Wang, of Chinese descent, is a self-taught inventor and James Bond fan. The small group finds a mysterious map in Spanish that leads them to discover the treasure of a famous and legendary pirate, One-Eyed Willy. The Goonies has become a cult film for the generations of the eighties, who remember the film as one of the essential ones of the period. In 2017, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
