Information
Photo of one of the most iconic sports moments of all time, autographed by Mike Tyson, framed (without glass), 62 x 46 cm, and certified by Beckett. The episode is one of the most scandalous and memorable in sports history. On June 28, 1997, at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, the rematch for the WBA world heavyweight title between reigning champion Evander Holyfield and challenger Mike Tyson took place. The bout, dubbed "The Sound and the Fury," went badly for Tyson right from the start. Feeling frustrated and claiming he had been subjected to unfair treatment (particularly unsanctioned headbutts) by Holyfield, Tyson lost control in the third round. During a clinch, Tyson spat out his mouthguard and viciously bit Holyfield's right ear, tearing off a piece of cartilage and spitting it into the ring. Despite the severity of the injury, referee Mills Lane penalized Tyson two points and, on medical advice, allowed the fight to continue. Seconds into the resumption, Tyson bit his opponent again, this time on the left ear. At that point, Lane stopped the fight and disqualified Tyson. As a direct result, the Nevada Athletic Commission revoked Tyson's license to fight in the United States (for over a year) and fined him $3 million. The incident, known as "The Bite Fight," remains a negative yet iconic landmark in boxing.
