The bond between Giovanni Romanini and La Compagnia della Forca represents one of the pinnacles of artistic collaboration in Italian comics, uniting the genius of Magnus (Roberto Raviola) with the extraordinary technical mastery of Romanini. Giovanni Romanini (1945–2020) was much more than a simple collaborator for Magnus. Having joined the Bolognese master's studio in 1969, he became his inker and main assistant, helping define the style of masterpieces such as Kriminal, Satanik, and Alan Ford. His ability to replicate and refine Magnus's style was such that readers often couldn't distinguish where one's work ended and the other's began. Considered by many critics to be the Magnus-Romanini duo's "Symphony No. 1," La Compagnia della Forca (1977), consisting of 20 issues, is a masterpiece of humorous fantasy. It recounts the adventures of a "Brancaleonian" mercenary company led by Sir Percy de Montblanc, a noble but clumsy knight. The group travels through a fantastical Middle Ages populated by monsters, dragons, and bizarre figures, seeking glory and riches but almost always ending up in tragicomic trouble.
