The Japanese photographer Nobuyoshi Araki has become a true master of bold sensuality, sometimes venturing into extreme territory. In works like this, where he openly depicts the technique of bondage, he dialectically surpasses the excess of modesty and the preemptive censorship that once characterized the culture of his country. Yet, upon closer inspection, Araki proves to be deeply poetic. He demonstrates it in the surprising yet profoundly harmonious juxtaposition of bodies and flowers, leaving us wondering which of these subjects are truly sensual.
