La figura di Davide trova un confronto con quella del David con la testa di Golia festeggiato dalle fanciulle di Israele, conservato a Napoli, Museo di Capodimonte.private collection.
Qui il giovane eroe biblico è ritratto nel momento della riflessione e del raccoglimento, dopo aver ucciso il gigante: volge la testa verso sinistra quasi ad ascoltare il richiamo divino, mentre con la destra stringe, come a volerlo proteggere, il macabro trofeo della enorme testa mozzata.
