The composition of the painting finds a comparison with that of the Incredulity of Saint Thomas by Giuseppe Vermiglio (Alessandria 1587 - 1635 circa), in Rome in the Church of San Tommaso ai Cenci, signed and dated 1612. The painting is therefore probably attributable to a Caravaggesque artist of Northern European origin, active around the second decade of the seventeenth century. The painting presented here is distinguished by a greater simplification of the gestures and a smaller crowding of characters, which favors a deeper concentration on the sacred event, in the spirit of the Counter-Reformation dictates of the time.
