The paintings comes from a famous invention by Jacob Jordaens, the Holy Family with the Infant Saint John, in the National Gallery in London (inv. NG164). Compared to the London prototype, the painting proposes a sort of profane version with a different arrangement of the figures, while faithfully replicating the faces of the Virgin, Saint Joseph, Saint John and, partially, also of the Baby Jesus (here moved to the background), and with the addition of the dog in the foreground.
