Il dipinto mostra forti legami stilistici con la pittura emiliana del Cinquecento, da Parmigianino ad Ercole Procaccini. Di particolare interesse risulta l’iscrizione apposta sul retro del telaio, che suggerisce il nome dell’artista Ippolito Costa (Bologna o Mantova 1506 – Mantova 1561), figlio di Lorenzo Costa il Vecchio e padre di Lorenzo Costa il Giovane, figura sulla quale fonti e notizie risultano ancora oggi piuttosto limitate.

Si segnala una composizione affine in un dipinto attribuito a Astolfo Petrazzi, conservato al Musée Fesch di Ajaccio.
