L'opera, firmata in basso a destra sulla roccia, si discosta dalla consueta iconografia del Riposo durante la fuga in Egitto poiché i protagonisti sono caratterizzati da tratti fisiognomici non idealizzati. I volti della giovane Vergine, del Bambino e di San Giuseppe sono tipici di Kneller, ritrattista noto e molto ricercato nelle più celebri corti nord-europee. Originale e singolarmente elegante appare la figura seduta di spalle che si volge verso destra, da identificarsi con un angelo, in soccorso della famiglia durante la sosta.
