We thank Professor Riccardo Lattuada for confirming the attribution after having examined the work on a photographic basis.

This painting (lot 223) and the following one depicting Saint Paul (lot 224) are unequivocally conceived as complementary also on a compositional level.
According to the scholar, these paintings can be attributed to the youthful phase of Francesco De Mura, in a period characterised by a marked Solimenesque influence.
Among the versions identified so far and qualitatively comparable, we should mention, in particular, the pairs preserved in private collections in Bologna and Foggia, mentioned by Mario Alberto Pavone, the Saint Paul the Apostle kept at the Galleria Nazionale della Puglia “Girolamo e Rosaria Devanna” in Bitonto and the Saint Peter the Apostle auctioned at Christie's, London, 8 December 2006, lot 229 (for the iconographic fortune of the canvases see V. Pugliese, Una questione demuriana. Tracce di un San Paolo apostolo giovane , in Angeli, stemmi, confraternite, arte, edited by M. Pasculli Ferrara, D. Donofrio Del Vecchio, 2007, pp. 449-462).
