Il dipinto rielabora in formato orizzontale un prototipo di Gaspare Diziani,riferibile alla metà degli anni Cinquanta del Settecento, già in collezione Busiri-Vici e successivamente in collezione Canessa a Milano (cfr. A. P. Zugni - Tauro, Gaspare Diziani, Venezia 1971, tav. 168). Per il presente dipinto è stata avanzata un'attribuzione a Giuseppe Diziani, figlio e suo successore.
