La composizione recupera quella del dipinto di medesimo soggetto apparso sul mercato nel 1963 (Finarte, Milano, 19-20 novembre 1963, lotto 89) e successivamente pubblicato da Filippo Maria Ferro nel 2003 (cfr. F. M. Ferro, Nuvolone. Una famiglia di pittori nella Milano del '600, Soncino 2003, p. 322, fig. 4b).

Il dipinto presenta significative affinità formali con l’opera di identico soggetto eseguita in età giovanile da Carlo Francesco Nuvolone per la chiesa di Sant’Agostino a Como (Ferro, op. cit., p. 172).
