Specialist Notes

VERY RARE EDITION, owned by only six libraries in Italy.

"Giovan Battista Pino's Ragionamento sopra de l'asino is a complex and not always clear work... The pamphlet - halfway between the reworking of Renaissance treatises and the ancient encyclopedias of Gellius and Macrobius, widely read and imitated in the sixteenth century - demonstrates a strong ideological connotation. The scant biographical information we possess about its author does not help us to fully understand all the historical and political allusions scattered throughout the Ragionamento. Pino's participation in an embassy to Charles V, aimed at denouncing the bad administration of the viceroy Pedro de Toledo in the Kingdom of Naples and expressing the population's disappointment at the attempt by the Spanish authorities to establish the Inquisition tribunal (March 1547), certainly influenced the composition of the work. (...) Compared to the previous authors from whom Pino reworks various ideas, the Ragionamento grafts the political theme onto the usual parodic structure. This choice gives depth to a A "microgenre" that is at times casual, rhetorically complacent, and rather ephemeral. The contingent motivations that explain the writer's need to express his opinion on the riots of 1547-1548 acquire a universal value thanks to a complex and compelling style that demands audience participation.
