Specialist Notes

Work I: The Historia was a long gestation. Begun in 1701, it was likely completed around 1711 and published in 1713. It consists of three volumes, each divided into two decades: the first begins at the origins and ends in 1282, focusing in particular on the events of the Sicilian Vespers; the second follows the vicissitudes of the Kingdom up to 1462, that is, until the conquests of Ferdinand II of Aragon; the third, finally, after having dwelt at length on the lives of Charles V and Philip II, extends to 1582. A fourth part, also announced, was never completed.
