Specialist Notes

First edition of this celebrated text on the city of Sorrento, written by the Jesuit and humanist Nicola Partenio Giannattasio. This is the first of three volumes dedicated to the passing of the seasons: Aestates, Autumni, Ver. The work, dedicated to the Archbishop of Taranto, Francesco Pignatelli, is divided into three books, each divided into eight chapters. The author, a Jesuit, poet, and historian, records his days spent between Amalfi and Sorrento, from July to October. Of particular note are the final chapter of the first book (pp. 77-93), which describes the Vesuvian eruption of 1694 with references to those of 1680 and 1685; and the fourth chapter of the second book (pp. 130-145), which recounts the 1694 earthquake, accompanied by a brief catalogue of previous earthquakes.
