Specialist Notes
Rare and valuable original edition of the first and only Neapolitan version of Tasso's masterpiece. Cat. Piantanida,3051: "This is the first and only translation of "Gerusalemme Liberata" into Neapolitan; it was highly praised by contemporaries, particularly Redi, who compared it to Lalli's "Aeneid travestita".'' It has footnotes which Croce discusses at length (Nuovi Saggi, pp. 252-53): ''This Neapolitan translation is now of primary interest to us for the notes that accompany the first edition. They are not just notes of words, but also notes that recall people and things of that time; they speak of brigands, warriors and captains, of curious characters, doctors and abbots, they narrate anecdotes and customs, they explain mottos and words of the Neapolitan dialect. It is rare to find complete copies of all the plates'' - Choix, Olschki XII,18758; Brunet,V,669; Graesse,VI,34; Tassiana Collection,725. 1689
