Specialist Notes
Nicola Fortunato (Giffoni Valle Piana, 1720 - Naples after 1771), like his teacher Genovesi and other Neapolitan economists, including Abbot Galiani, embraced the economic policy advocated by Bernardo Tanucci, who was engaged in a fierce conflict with the baronial class. The reformist movement believed that the nobility's prejudice against trade was unnecessary and that it was essential that the "useful" population increase relative to the "useless" population in order to regenerate the kingdom's economic life. These ideas, clearly expounded in his most important work, "Reflections on Trade," demonstrate a clear understanding of the serious problems existing in the kingdom's provinces.
