Specialist Notes
Giovanni Giuseppe Origlia Paolino (Polla, 24 July 1718[1] – circa 1784[1]) was an Italian jurist, historian and philosopher. Probably born in Naples, he was the author of four "entertainments" De' principj del diritto naturale , printed in Naples in 1746 by Giovanni di Simone, of a supplement to the Portable Historical Dictionary of the Abbot Jean Baptiste Ladvocat, but he is best known for the two present volumes of his Istoria dello studio di Napoli. This is the first complete history of the University of Naples, in which the author demonstrates "with good arguments" (as Girolamo Tiraboschi recalls in his History of Italian Literature ), that the university was not truly "founded" by Frederick II of Swabia, but, before him, by the Normans, although they did not "truly give it the form of a university" and did not "honour it with the privileges that befit such bodies", which instead was done by Frederick, who thus earned the reputation of its true founder.
