Portrait of the author on the frontispiece, copperplate vignette on the title page, copy with burrs, some slight foxing, contemporary stiff parchment binding, gilt title inside the smooth spine, very slight defects.
Specialist Notes
Work I: The work is divided into three books, each introduced by a splendid full-page illustration depicting the Annunciation, the Visitation, and the Nativity, respectively. This is the first edition of Giovanni Giolito's translation of the Latin work of Jacopo Sannazzaro, a celebrated Neapolitan poet and humanist of the Italian Renaissance. He was a prominent figure not only in the literary sphere, but also for his significant cultural and political role: he served as secretary and ambassador to several Italian and European courts, including that of Frederick of Aragon and the King of France, Charles VIII.
