Specialist Notes

First edition of this famous study, complete with 19 plates, on the minerals found on Vesuvius, conducted by mineralogist Teodoro Celestino Monticelli and volcanologist Niccola Covelli. It would have been the first part of a larger study, which, however, was never published. Teodoro Monticelli (Brindisi, 1759 – Pozzuoli, 1845) was a leading figure in the Italian scientific scene, active as a naturalist, mineralogist, and scholar of volcanic phenomena. A priest and university professor, he devoted much of his work to the study of Vesuvius, analyzing its rocks and minerals systematically and with scientific rigor.
