With eight folded copperplate plates, an allegorical vignette on the title page, figurative initials, some browning and burnishing, wormholes, one plate with several tears, contemporary hardback binding, tears on the spine. Ownership note in the title page.

Original edition of this important treatise on volcanology. The work was seminal not only for its valuable collection and critical analysis of sources, but also because it explicitly presented the history of a volcano not simply as a succession of external phenomena, but as the process of its formation through those phenomena.
