Information
Naples, 1769. Oblong folio, title page, dedication to the "Society of Fine Arts, Manufactures and Commerce of London," portrait of Ferdinand IV, 40 etched plates signed on the plate depicting beautiful and artistic views of the Phlegraean Fields, with 6 plates dedicated to Pestum. The first engraving, depicting a topographical map of the Phlegraean Fields, also contains a list of the plates. A tab with the catalog of Morghen's works is glued to the flyleaf. Some light browning. Bound in half parchment and cardboard. Various defects. Brown cloth back slipcase.
Specialist Notes
An extremely rare complete original edition of the six plates on Pestum from this work, which, along with Hamilton, constitutes one of the first artistic representations of the Phlegraean Fields, until then the subject of mainly historical attention. All the plates are signed by Morghen, the last five also by Antonio Jolli as the painter.
