Information
[sl, se], 1771. Imperial folio. Title page and 27 full-margin etched plates mounted in matboard (2 of which are loose), annotation in an old hand in the upper margin of some plates, small ink stain on the title page, hardboard binding with leather laces, contemporary full-leather binding preserved, empty, with framed boards and coat of arms in the center, gilt title on the spine. In a slipcase with a brown cardboard lid.
Specialist Notes
A magnificent and picturesque collection of engravings depicting views of the Gulf of Naples and the ancient sites along the coast of Pozzuoli, Baia, and Cumae, inspired by the style of Piranesi. Very little is known about the author, the Frenchman Étienne Giraud, other than that he was an architect, draftsman, and engraver active in and around Naples between 1767 and 1771. Undoubtedly fascinated by the landscape, he created one of the most sumptuous collections of views dedicated to the Gulf of Naples. Extremely rare.
