Specialist Notes

An important find, the painting is remembered in all the repertoires and monographs on the artist. He replicated several versions and ours here can rightfully be the one remembered as the most successful, in harmony with the achievements of Paul Delaroche, a painter loved by Jalabert. "Anecdotal, easy painting" as Jean Girou reminds us in Vies des personnages célèbre de l'Aude in 1940, which was purchased and taken to the United States of America, but not without its overall solidity and fluidity. It was presented at the Salon of 1846 with the number 1106 demonstrating the painter's abilities in line with the best of historical romanticism in mid-nineteenth-century France. Not least, Jalabert was also curator of the Museum of Fine Arts in Carcassonne from 1862 to 1888, as was the custom at the time, giving a physiognomy to the museum that is still central to its exhibition process today.
