27.46 gr. - Diam. 39.70 mm.
Obverse: Liberty standing left, holding a staff surmounted by a Phrygian cap in her right hand, her left hand resting on a fasces with an axe placed outside and an X-shaped binding; - Reverse: Inscription within two crossed oak branches.
In January 1799, following the entry of French troops into Naples and the abandonment of the capital by Ferdinand IV of Bourbon, who had taken refuge in Palermo, the Neapolitan Republic was established. The French army, commanded by General Jean-Étienne Championnet, supported the birth of the new republican government, inspired by the Enlightenment principles of liberty, equality, and popular sovereignty, directly derived from the experience of the French Revolution. Also known as the Parthenopean Republic, it was supported primarily by intellectuals, jurists, and sectors of the city's bourgeoisie, but struggled to gain widespread support among the masses.

The republican experience was short-lived: after about five months, in June 1799, forces loyal to the monarchy managed to reconquer the city. The counterrevolutionary effort was led by Cardinal Fabrizio Ruffo, at the head of the Sanfedista army, with the decisive support of the British fleet, in which Admiral Horatio Nelson played a central role. Upon returning to the throne, Ferdinand IV launched a harsh political repression, which severely affected the protagonists of the republican era: numerous prominent figures, including Mario Pagano and Domenico Cirillo, were executed, tragically marking the end of one of the most significant attempts at political renewal in Southern Italy at the end of the 18th century.
